Earthquake ‘strongest in decades’ provokes tsunami in Pacific

(MENAFN) A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, followed by strong aftershocks, prompting tsunami alerts throughout several northern Pacific coastal areas.

The quake, which hit around 11:30 a.m. local time approximately 136 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is the strongest to hit the region since 1952, according to Russia’s Geophysical Service of the Academy of Sciences.

Tsunami waves have already reached the shore of Severo-Kurilsk, a town in the northern Kuril Islands, leading local officials to evacuate residents to higher ground away from the coast.

In northern Japan, waves of about 30 centimeters were recorded along Hokkaido’s coastline, with authorities warning that subsequent waves could be larger.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center has issued advisories for the entire U.S. West Coast, parts of Canada and Alaska, and the entire state of Hawaii, urging caution due to the potential tsunami threat.
