India Exceeds One Billion Tons of Coal Production

(MENAFN) India has generated over one billion tons of coal during the 2024-25 fiscal year, announced Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Monday.

The South Asian country aims to boost its output to 1.13 billion tons by the 2029-30 period, he stated in a written response to a query in the upper house of parliament.

The government has introduced multiple measures to enhance domestic coal production.

These include implementing a single window clearance system for new ventures, revising regulations, adopting advanced technologies, broadening current projects, and auctioning coal blocks for commercial mining, according to the website Moneycontrol, which quoted Reddy.

India has already permitted 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in commercial mining, facilitating increased private and international participation in the sector.

The coal ministry has also accelerated coal block development, allowing captive mine owners to sell surplus coal in the open market.

To reduce dependence on imports, New Delhi launched the Coking Coal Mission, aiming to improve the supply of coking coal essential for the steel industry.

Nevertheless, India continues to import coal, but mainly for specialized requirements such as coking coal and higher-grade non-coking coal, which are scarce domestically due to limited reserves or unavailability, Reddy noted.

Currently, coal remains crucial for India’s energy landscape, accounting for approximately 70% of its electricity generation.
